Stile Antico

Introduction

Stile Antico has established itself as one of the most prominent and innovative vocal ensembles in the world. Working without a conductor, its twelve members have delighted audiences on four continents with their fresh, vibrant and moving performances of Renaissance polyphony. His best-selling recordings have received awards such as the Gramophone Prize for Early Music, the Diapason d’or de l’année, the Edison Klassiek Prize and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. The group has received three Grammy® nominations and performed live at the 60th Grammy® Awards at Madison Square Garden.

Based in London, Stile Antico has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious venues and festivals. The group maintains a close collaboration with Wigmore Hall and has performed at the BBC Proms, Buckingham Palace, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Cité de la Musique, the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and the National Auditorium in Madrid. Stile Antico is frequently invited to participate in the most important festivals in Europe, among which the Early Music Festivals of Antwerp, Bruges, Utrecht and York, the Lucerne Easter Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival stand out.

Since their North American debut in 2009 at the Boston Early Music Festival, Stile Antico has toured frequently throughout the United States and Canada. The group performs regularly in Boston and New York, and has participated in the Ravinia Festival, the National Cathedral and Library of Congress in Washington, the Chan Center in Vancouver, and in concert series spanning twenty-five states in the United States. Stile Antico has also performed in Mexico, Colombia, South Korea, Macau and Hong Kong.

Stile Antico’s performances are often praised for their immediacy, expressive commitment, and sensitive and imaginative response to text. These qualities derive from the group’s collaborative working style: its members rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical results. The group is also recognized for its engaging programming, which explores thematic connections between works to shed new light on Renaissance music. In addition to its core repertoire, Stile Antico has premiered works by Kerry Andrew, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Joanna Marsh, John McCabe, Nico Muhly, Giles Swayne and Huw Watkins. His various collaborators include Fretwork, Folger Consort, Marino Formenti, Lemn Sissay, B’Rock, Rihab Azar and Sting.

In addition to his concert and recording work, Stile Antico is passionate about sharing his repertoire and style of work with the widest possible audience. After many years of residence at the Dartington International Summer School, the group now teaches courses at the Gresham’s Summer School of Music and regularly organizes singing days open to all. Stile Antico also collaborates extensively with young singers in university and school settings, as well as with the Rodolfus Foundation. The support of this charitable foundation has allowed it to offer scholarships to talented young groups and teach an annual Youth Consortium course. Stile Antico is proud to be a member of the European early music network REMA.

In 2025, Stile Antico will celebrate twenty years as a professional ensemble with galas at Wigmore Hall, the Boston Early Music Festival and for AMUZ Antwerpen. The group also commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Palestrina, the quintessential master of stile antico, with a series of concerts and the release of a new album for Decca Classics.

Stile antico is one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles, renowned for vibrant and expressive performances of music from the renaissance.
